English FA Cup – Wigan vs Manchester City

Monday night sees a repeat of the 2013 FA Cup Final at The DW Stadium as Wigan host Manchester City in the FA Cup Fourth Round. That day in 2013 remains one of Wigan’s most famous in their history as they upset the odds to beat oil rich, Manchester City 1-0. The Latics have a tremendous recent record against their more illustrious opponents and also knocked The Citizens out of the FA Cup in 2014. Pep Guardiola will be confident that his side can avoid an upset on Monday night though as he aims to keep a stunning quadruple on the cards.

  • When: 7:55PM, Monday, February 19th, 2018
  • Where: DW Stadium, Wigan, England

Wigan have struggled in the last couple of weeks and back to back defeats in the league saw them miss out on the chance to go to the top of the League One table. One of Wigan’s key midfielders, Sam Morsy, will miss Monday’s game after picking up his tenth yellow card of the season. Cult hero Will Grigg is likely to lead the attack for Wigan, with former Manchester United youngster, Nick Powell in behind him.

Manchester City

Manchester City picked up a comfortable 4-0 win away at Basel in their last fixture as Pep Guardiola’s side continue their stunning form in all competitions. Brazilian striker, Gabriel Jesus has returned from injury and could well feature in the game, with Guardiola likely to make a whole host of changes to his starting line up. Yaya Toure, Claudio Bravo, Danilo and John Stones are all in line to make appearances.

Talking Points

Wigan’s FA Cup triumph over Manchester City in 2013 was the club’s first and only major trophy win.

  1. Wigan have won 8 of the 28 games between these two sides.
  2. Will Grigg is Wigan’s top scorer this season with 15 goals, Sergio Aguero leads the way for Manchester City with 29.

Despite Wigan’s excellent recent record against Manchester City in the FA Cup, it’s still hard to look past a City win here. Pep Guardiola’s side have lost only twice this season and they look likely to sweep all before them right now. I’m backing City to continue their march towards the quadruple with a comfortable win here.

Betting Tips (Coral)

Manchester City start this game as huge favourites at odds of 1/7, whilst a home win for Wigan is priced up at 22/1, with the draw available at 7/1. I can’t see Wigan causing City too many problems in this one, so the 8/11 on City to Win to Nil looks like a great bet to me. In terms of goal scorers, Gabriel Jesus to score first at 14/5 looks tempting to me. The Brazilian will be aiming to come back with a bang if he starts the game, especially considering Sergio Aguero’s recent form. Spurs to Win & Over 3.5 Goals – 29/20 (Coral).
